GHI
GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVES
MISSION STATEMENT
Global Health Initiative (GHI) aims to provide sustainable, continuous care and aid to global communities.
WHAT WE DO
In collaboration with Ohana One, GHI works with medical staff in Mozambique to increase English literacy through virtual English lessons on topics such as Social Determinants of Health, Biological Systems, and more. Aiming to ultimately bridge medical education disparities and improve community access to surgical care, we hope that our weekly lessons build a sense of confidence in our staff’s English speaking skills.
Our work also expands across local borders, where we work with Refugee Health Alliance to coordinate shelter outreach trips to Tijuana, Mexico, in efforts of providing ethical and culturally-inclusive care to marginalized and vulnerable populations in Tijuana. Earlier this year, we were able to support refugees seeking asylum after the expiration of Title 42 by hosting a Spring Donation Drive at the UCLA dorms as well, empowering Bruins to support our global community.
CURRICULUM TEAM
Partnering with OhanaOne, GHI’s Curriculum Team focuses on creating curriculum presentations and teaching biweekly English lessons to medical staff in Mozambique via Zoom. During off weeks, our 17 member team holds office hours structured to retain concepts from the previous week and incorporate terms learned into simulated conversations. Through this effort, our members help facilitate an increase in medical English literacy as well as open opportunities for more local health professionals to become board certified.
ADVOCACY TEAM
Beyond that, GHI also recognizes the power of education, and thus we hope to use social media as a platform of empowerment by shedding light on underexposed topics in healthcare. We’ve given our members a chance to speak on topics that they’re interested in on our podcast “Sick! The Podcast,” and we’ve also covered topics such as Blood Donation Inclusivity and Structural Racism in Dermatology on our Instagram!
